Successfully maintaining a small neighborhood vibe, Mission Hill is one of Boston’s most diverse areas. Constantly bustling, Brigham Circle and Roxbury Crossing are always full of life. What Mission Hill lacks in square footage, it makes up for in soul and character.
The smaller the community, the tighter knit they become. The same goes for Mission Hill residents. Unlike Back Bay, or Brookline, large four- and five-bedroom rental units remain relatively cheap, in Mission Hill. Like any close-to-city neighborhood surrounded by bustling industries, gentrification is a constant threat that the community unites to fight against.
While some may enjoy luxury condominiums, Mission Hill residents are more than content with life the way it is, and consistent efforts to preserve their ways of living has only confirmed the community’s already present state of strength and resilience as a whole.
Many choose Mission Hill as their home not only for the affordability in living, but also the proximity to some of Boston’s best hospitals and universities. Many medical professionals flock to “The Hill” in order to have a short walk to work with the Longwood Medical area located just at the foot of Mission Hill. While other neighborhoods orbiting Boston mirror the city’s lifestyle and expansive layout, Mission Hill takes advantage of a smaller scale and walkability is not the only upside. Many enjoy the perks of a close-knit group, knowing one’s neighborhoods, and becoming actively involved in the community and its affairs. Residents in Mission Hill band together to solve community-wide matters and maintain their sense of neighborhood pride and self-reliance without fault.
Due to its small size and lack of publicity many do not know of the beauties within Mission Hill. For one, Mission Hill is a mixture of residents – not simply undergrads taking advantage of affordable rentals as many assume. When straying from the bustling Huntington Avenue and Tremont Street, tucked around the corners of residential streets are gorgeous brownstones. Besides these hidden architectural gems, quiet spots overlooking Jamaica Plain can be found just up the hill – although you may have to work for them by traveling up a few steps. Getting to the top is said to be quite worth it in the end once you reach New England Baptist Hospital, which holds court at the very top.
If you prefer less historical sites and a more nature-serenity, the perfect place can be found on the opposite side of the hill. The place residents call the Back of the Hill is lush and covered with green spaces including the Iroquois Woods and the Back of the Hill Urban Wild. Although this leafy hangout is a commonly traveled place for Mission Hill’s college students, many visitors are unaware of its existence, as with the other hidden gems, and therefore do not experience Mission Hill the way residents do.
