Home to many famous faces such as Malcom X and Donna Summer, Roxbury is a town known for its diverse community, robust history, and up-and-coming downtown scene. Originally one of the first towns founded in Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1630, Roxbury has seen many changes over the years, which is shown off by its diverse architectural styles. Public transportation now easily connects Roxbury to downtown Boston and its surrounding neighborhoods. Filled with bars, restaurants, and movie theaters, Roxbury truly welcomes all its residents and serves as a catalyst for real connections to form.

Community

As the number of college students attempting Boston-centric universities increases, so do the residents of Roxbury. Spillover of college students from Mission Hill and Fenway has made Roxbury increasingly popular with students and young professionals. Aside from the students and recent graduates, families make up a large percentage of the Roxbury population. Attracted to the neighborhood’s diversity and architectural history, young families find Roxbury to be intriguing as well as easier on the purse strings. Across all residents, Roxbury is known to be a beacon to all – renters and buyers alike. And despite the fear that gentrification will eliminate the neighborhood’s beloved diversity and raw charm, newer residents especially say they have never lived anywhere friendlier.

Roxbury has become a very attractive place to live, with a  real estate market likely to be on the upswing for the foreseeable future. This is due to a tremendous revitalization within the last few years. In the Nubian Square (formerly known as Dudley Square) area especially, new construction, shops, and restaurants have completely transformed the neighborhood. As new plans and permits continue to follow, even more welcomed changes are on the way.

Unique Aspect

There is something very unique about Roxbury which is, if you live in Roxbury, you love Roxbury. In speaking with people who grew up in Roxbury, their love for the neighborhood is limitless. Those who grew up in this neighborhood say proudly that it was a privilege to do so. Community events were frequent and included neighborhood-wide talent shows. Included in residents’ love for the neighborhood is their pride for its thriving arts and music community. As a result of the love for Roxbury, the community actively fights any regulation or corporation that tries to heavily commercialize through gentrification. Roxbury changes with the times, but residents fight hard to maintain its raw charm.
