As a rising Boston hotspot, many different groups consider South Boston to be their home. Ranging from affordable rentals to million-dollar condos, Southie’s real estate market has strengthened significantly in the last decade. With a seemingly unlimited number of rentals, people are flooding into this neighborhood. As Southie’s real estate prices rise, so do the residents looking to live in the new and improved neighborhood. Over the last few years, there has been a surge in new construction across South Boston on both the East Side and the West Side. The construction is creating a better sense of connection across the entire neighborhood, both literally and figuratively. The Broadway Village corner is now connected to the South End by various restaurants and high-end grocery stores, and the A Street corridor feels fully connected to the Fort Point and Seaport neighborhoods. In terms of mental connection, access to all city points has created a more cohesive town vibe that allows residents to feel more tied to their community. The new access does not replace but rather complements the old spirit of Southie – a feature that attracts new life and creates new generations of loyal residents.
When moving to a new place, there is no doubt a mental list of requirements the city must have before you agree to settle there. This list may include easy commutes, decent living space, affordable rent, and access to nature for most city-dwellers. Like other aspects of life, residents look for compromise, usually aiming to meet two or three of their list requirements. In South Boston, compromise is not necessary.
